Cannabis isn’t a gateway drug.
Alcohol isn’t a gateway drug.
Nicotine isn’t a gateway drug.
Caffeine isn’t a gateway drug.
Trauma is the real gateway –Russell Brand
It’s child abuse. It’s neglect. It’s growing up in chaos, without safety, support or love.
What we often call ‘drug problems’ are usually just symptoms, the visible expression of invisible pain.
Beneath the surface of substance abuse, violence, hypersexuality, or self-harm, there’s almost always a deeper wound.
And that wound often began in childhood.
We talk about addiction like it’s a moral failing.
But more often, it’s a survival strategy, a way of coping with what felt unbearable.
Instead of asking “What’s wrong with them?”
We need to start asking, “What happened to them?”
Because while society points fingers at the homeless, the addicts, the ones on the spectrum…
Too many forget: your own child could be in your shoes 10 or 15 years from now, if we don’t start addressing the root cause.
Healing doesn’t begin with shame.
It begins with understanding.
With compassion.
With connection.
Until we treat the wound, the symptoms will keep showing up, again and again.
